Rising damp comes from water in the ground that has risen up through bricks and mortar of a building through capillary action. This is where water is sucked up from the ground and rises up the wall via small tubes or holes that form inside a building.
Rising damp is a problem that many homeowners face, but one that they should not have to put up with. Our specialists at Prokil can help you identify whether your property is suffering from rising damp and provide an effective solution to treat it. Learn more about where rising damp comes from and what causes rising damp to occur:
The Causes of Rising Damp
Rising damp is caused by ground water entering and ‘rising’ through the inside of your home’s structure, which usually presents itself on walls around your home or building. It can normally only travel so far up a wall, roughly 1.2 metres high, as the strength of gravity overpowers the capillary action and prevents the water moving any higher.
Most properties with rising damp are those without a sufficient damp proof course, as there is no barrier to prevent ground water from passing through the structure.
How To Spot Rising Damp In Your Home
Fortunately, rising damp is fairly easy to identify, meaning it can be treated more quickly. You can often identify a rising damp problem by its ‘tide line’ of yellow or brown staining that moves slowly up a wall, internally or externally. You may also find that your skirting boards and floorboards are damp or rotting.
In some cases, you may also notice rising damp in the form of small fluffy white deposits on your plaster – this is actually salt that has been washed out of the bricks.
