You may have heard of cavity wall ties but do you know what they are? Used to bind walls together, wall ties are essential for the long life of your property’s wall. They are typically installed during construction and can fail with age. At Prokil, we supply a complete retro-fit cavity wall ties replacement service.
What are cavity wall ties
Put simply, cavity wall ties are used to join the outside and inside wall of a property together. During the construction process, wall ties are placed between the cement joints of the property’s walls. They are typically used for walls that have been built from either bricks or blocks. Cavity wall ties are built from a metal construction; we use only stainless steel cavity wall ties at Prokil. Our team provides wall ties for all sized commercial and domestic buildings.
Cavity wall ties are not a permanent product and will inevitably deteriorate over time which can be attributed to many factors. We sometimes find that certain properties have not been built with enough ties but this is a rare scenario. The most common situation we find is failed wall ties due to general deterioration and corrosion.
How do cavity wall ties fail?
In the past, mild steel or galvanised steel materials were used for cavity wall ties which has led to failure in many properties. The failure in these wall ties can be attributed to either rust and/or rust due to exposure to the elements. At Prokil, we use stainless steel cavity wall ties as it is very strong and will last for years to come; it is also corrosion resistant even under the toughest of conditions.
The solution
If you suspect there is a problem with your cavity wall ties, the very first thing to do is to give our team a call today or fill in our contact form. The team will turn up at the prearranged time to assess the state of the ties in your home. Afterwards, we will send you a report containing our findings and suggestions.
During the survey, the surveyor will drill a very small hole in the brickwork of your home. We will then slowly insert a CCTV mini-camera into the small hole. This allows our team to inspect your ties up close and get a good look. Once we have finished, we will pull out the mini-camera and then tidy up.
If we discover that your wall ties have failed, do not worry as we have the right solution for your property. Our team have the skills and equipment to provide retro-fit replacements for cavity wall ties. We act quickly when it comes to cavity wall ties as this is not a problem that should be left unattended. Typically most cavity wall ties contain a gap of 9m – 12m which need 2.5 wall ties for every square metre.
Your property will most likely fail a building survey which will be the least of your worries. If cavity ties are left unattended, there is a chance of serious issues happening to the walls of your property. Walls that are not tied together can move independently.
