Cavity Wall Ties

Cavity wall ties are fixings used to bind the outside and inside wall or leafs of your house together. The brickwork cavity walls of your home are two independent walls tied together. Cavity wall ties are usually made of metal. The ties are built into the cement joints between the bricks during the original construction. At Prokil, we supply cavity wall ties for domestic and commercial buildings.

The ties in your cavity wall deteriorate over the years and eventually may need replacing. Occasionally, we have come across walls not built with sufficient ties in the first place but usually many cavity wall ties deteriorated due to corrosion to the point where they have failed.

The team at Prokil will provide retro replacements which are a quick and correct method. If cavity wall ties are left unrepaired in your property, the consequences are far-reaching. Firstly, your property will fail a building survey and could become dangerous to inhabit as the walls will start to move independently of each other.

Damage detection and replacement

Cavity wall ties are relatively easy to replace, and the repair will be permanent. All you need to do is to call Prokil and we will send a member of our team out to see you. A member of our team will drill a small hole in the brickwork of your property and inspect your ties using our CCTV mini camera. We can then give you a competitive quote for the work and as always all our work is fully guaranteed. It is very easy to determine whether a complete replacement is needed or just a small area (possibly caused by damage to the outer skin).

After our assessment our propriety remedial tying system can be installed as required. Most cavity walls have a gap of between 90mm-120mm and require cavity wall ties at around 2.5 wall ties per square metre of brickwork.

Causes of wall tie failure

Stainless steel cavity wall ties are installed as standard in new houses built today but this wasn’t always the case. Historically either mild steel or galvanised steel ties were used, both are susceptible to corrosion, and rust after time. On the other hand, stainless steel is strong and very resistant to corrosion even under the toughest conditions.

Water finds its way into the cavity of your property and sits on the cavity wall ties and rusts starts to form. After time they rust through completely and fail.

Act fast if you have wall tie damage

If there is wall tie failure in your property, damage to the outer leaf of the cavity wall will speed up the process of wall tie failure. Once the outer layer becomes cracked, water can penetrate through the wall and cause serious damage to inner layers and the cavity wall ties.
