Well, often there are two reasons for it: lack of ventilation or high levels of humidity. The smell of mould can vary depending on its type and where it is growing, from walking down to the basement to the musty smell in your tumble dryer/washing machine. 

As the mold grows, it releases gasses known as microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), which gives it the well known musty, stale and pungent smell.
