Introduction:
A homeowner recently reached out to Prokil after discovering signs of damp on one of their internal walls.
We paid a visit to their property in Peckham, London to carry out a thorough damp survey. When assessing the affected area, signs of rising damp were clearly visible to the naked eye and this was reaffirmed by moisture readings.
With the client’s approval, we resolved to remove the damp-affected plaster, install a new damp proof course (DPC) and replaster the entire wall. This would eliminate the existing damp problem and prevent it from returning.
Preliminary work:
Before beginning any work on the wall, the room needed to be protected against accidental damage. We cleared all nearby items from the room, covered the floor with an impact-resistant protective tarpaulin, and made sure that any electrical fixtures would not be affected by the work carried out.
Work carried out:
Step 1:
Once the area was cleared and ready to be worked on, we removed all the damp-infected plaster and disposed of it safely. This gave us unobstructed access to the brickwork behind. The affected area was 1.2m in height.
Step 2:
We drilled a series of holes into the masonry, keeping them at a uniform distance from one another. We then used them to inject a chemical DPC into the wall, making sure to abide by the British Standard BS6576 while doing so.
Next, we pinned a specialist waterproof membrane to the wall. This would further prevent groundwater from making its way through to the internal wall.
Step 3:
With the DPC and membrane installed, we moved onto the final step: plastering. We installed a replacement plasterboard as groundwork, then covered it in a thin coating of plaster. We then removed all leftover waste material and made sure the site was safe to walk through.
Finished result:
The end result was a neatly plastered, damp-free wall ready for painting. The client was left with peace of mind that their home was clean, dry, and free from the harmful effects of rising damp.
