What Is A Damp Proof Course?
Damp proofing your home is essential in preventing moisture entering the interior of your property, affecting your possessions and ultimately your health.
A damp proof course is a long-term barrier designed to keep water out and protect your home from damp.
Since the Public Health Act of 1875 set laws for ground-level damp proof courses in walls, all subsequent properties should have been built with some form of damp proofing. Therefore, most modern properties will have some form of damp proof course already, and these protective materials are often made from slate, bitumen sheet or a plastic membrane) are usually fairly resistant to decay.
However, it is possible for a damp proof course to crack due to subsidence or deteriorate over a significant period of time, allowing damp to rise through the walls. It is also possible for the DPC to be breached by rubble and debris within the cavity wall.
