How Does Mold Occur?

You might be wondering, what causes mould and black mould? Mould, including black mould, often occurs when airborne moisture comes into contact with a surface cold enough for it to turn into small water droplets. This then creates the perfect environment for mould spores which are present in the air to settle and to germinate. As the mould grows and can spread to other surfaces including woodwork, plaster, furniture and other personal items.

The problem is often brought about through activities such as cooking and showering without sufficient means of ventilation, as they both produce large quantities of water vapour.

What Are The Effects of Mould?

Mould, in particularly black mould, could have negative impacts on your health. Generally, inhaling or ingesting black mould is associated with poor health in both humans and animals. This mainly affects major groups such as the very young, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions such as asthma. How To Identify Mould

Luckily, due to its displeasing appearance, mould is fairly easy to spot.

Black mould has quite a distinctive appearance. During the active and germinating phase, black mould is often very dark green or black, and can even be slimy.

During the inactive phase, it will have a dry and powdery appearance. But, don’t forget that black mould can be problematic during either phase, therefore we do not recommend putting off mould treatment for an extended period.

Some of the generic mould symptoms to look out for are:

  • Black spots clustered together
  • Green patches on walls
  • Wet patches on ceilings, walls or floors
  • A musty smell in rooms or cupboards
